David is a freelance Arts Management Consultant and Event Manager based in Edinburgh.  After graduating M.A. from the University of Aberdeen in 1978, his career in arts management started as Box Office Manager at the Traverse Theatre Club.  He soon became the van driver and Administrative Assistant for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra from which he was promoted to Concerts Manager when the SCO became a full-time chamber orchestra in 1980.  He was General Manager of The Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh from 1985-89 and then General Manager of the Academy of Ancient Music with Christopher Hogwood based in London. 

 

He returned to Edinburgh in 1993 to become the first Theatre Manager of the new Edinburgh Festival Theatre which opened the next year.  The Festival Theatre merged with the King’s Theatre in 1998.  After sixteen months as Acting General Manger in 2002, David was appointed Depute General Manager to be responsible for programming both theatres until July 2002.  In between working in the arts he has held management positions at the Clifton Hotel, Nairn, the Cotswold House Hotel, Chipping Campden and Borthwick Castle Hotel outside Edinburgh. 

 

He graduated Master of Music (M.Mus.) from the University of Edinburgh in December 2003.  David lectures on the history of theatre in Edinburgh, plays the fiddle, trombone and bagpipes and sings tenor.
